Description: A view of Union Station, Columbus, Ohio. The photograph includes a view of the station's ornate arcade along High Street as well as street traffic (automobile, trolley, and horse-drawn wagon or omnibus) and pedestrians. Designed by the famous Chicago architectural firm Daniel H. Burnham and Co., the building was Columbus's third Union Station. It opened in 1897, and the arcade was completed two years later. The station's architectural style, Beaux-Arts Classicism, drew on Burnham's experience designing the World's Columbian Exposition (1893) in Chicago. By the mid-20th century, train ridership had declined sharply, and in October 1976 all but one arch of the ornate facade was demolished. The station continued to offer Amtrak service until April 1977, but it was demolished in September 1978. The surviving arcade arch stands in Dimon McPherson Park, 218 West Street, Columbus. Description: Map showing Ohio railroad lines, indicated in red along with the name of the railroad. This map was included as a fold-out in the 1950 edition of "Ohio: An Empire Within an Empire." Originally published in February 1944 by the Ohio Development and Publicity Commission, this publication documents "the resources and facilities of Ohio, taking into particular consideration war expansions." Topics covered include agriculture. forestry, mineral resources, transportation, oil, retail and wholesale trade, and much more. According to information accompanying the map, Ohio had 8,482 miles of railroad at the time, ranking sixth in the nation for such mileage. Railroads represented include the Pennsylvania; New York Central; Baltimore and Ohio; Erie; Nickel Plate; Chesapeake and Ohio; Norfolk and Western; Wabash; Akron, Canton and Youngstown; Detroit, Toledo and Ironton; and Pittsburgh and Lake Erie. Description: Dated July 1923, this photograph shows a train decorated with American flags, banners, and a photograph of President Warren G. Harding on the front, while crowds line the train tracks near an American Railway Express train station in Portland, Oregon. This gathering probably marks the President and First Lady's arrival in Portland during their "Voyage of Understanding," a cross-country train journey that included numerous stops along the route where Harding had speaking engagements, and culminated in the first-ever presidential visit to the territory of Alaska. According to the official itinerary, the Hardings visited Portland on July 4. The trip was taken in spite of the president's failing health, and on August 2, Harding suffered a heart attack, and never made it to his second stop in Portland, scheduled for July 28. He died August 2, 1923, at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco, California. This photograph is part of a photograph album in the Warren G. Harding Photograph Collection (P146). Warren G. Harding, the 29th President of the United States (1921-1923), was born in Blooming Grove, Ohio, in 1865. At age 14, Harding attended Ohio Central College in Iberia, Ohio, where he edited the campus newspaper and became an accomplished public speaker. He married Florence Kling de Wolfe in 1891, and embarked on his political career in 1900 by winning a seat in the Ohio legislature. After serving two terms as an Ohio Senator, Harding served as Lieutenant Governor in 1904 for two years before returning to the newspaper business. Although he lost the 1910 gubernatorial race, Harding was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1914. Political insider Harry Daugherty promoted Harding for the Republican presidential nomination in 1920. His front porch campaign was centered on speeches given from his home in Marion, Ohio, pledging to return the country to “normalcy” in this post World War I era. Harding easily won the election, gaining 61 percent of the popular vote. On August 2, 1923, Harding unexpectedly died from a massive heart attack while touring the western United States, and is entombed in the Marion Cemetery. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Hocking Valley railroad depot in Upper Sandusky, Ohio. The Hocking Valley Railway was an Ohio railroad with a main line connecting Toledo and Athens via Columbus. The company was a continuation of the Mineral Railroad (1864), with the name Columbus and Hocking Valley Railroad adopted in June 1867. The main line opened for business in 1869. Photograph by Harry Evan Kinley (1882-1969), a native of Upper Sandusky. Kinley was active in local events and organizations, and spent his professional career as a clerk at his father's department store, and later as a travelling salesman for the Marion Paper & Supply Company (1934-1962). He was also an avid lifelong photographer, and the bulk of the Harry Kinley Collection is comprised of glass plate negatives documenting the Kinley family, the city of Upper Sandusky and Wyandot County and surrounding areas. Description: This photograph shows the an area of downtown Youngstown, Ohio centered on the intersection of North Front Street and South Phelps Street, with the rolling hills of the suburbs in the distance. The station for the Youngstown & Suburban Railway as well as the Pittsburgh, Libson & Western R.R. could be found 21 North Front Street, and is probably near the left side of the photograph. Trinity United Methodist Church, located at 30 West Front Street, is just visible at the bottom left corner of the photograph. The Falcon Bronze Company (left of center in the photograph), located at 218 South Phelps, was incorporated in 1895. The brass founders were manufacturers of brass, bronze, and copper castings for rolling mills, steel plants and blast furnaces. In front of Falcon Bronze is a sign for “Parking” for a “? ‘s Super Service Station” in the 100 block of West Front Street. The Hotel Ohio (also called The Ohio or Ohio Hotel), visible on the far right side of the photograph, has been a fixture in downtown Youngstown for at least a decade. In 1912, a new building was built with 400 rooms at 131 West Boardman Street at the southwest corner of South Hazel Street. Before 1947, the name was changed to the Pick-Ohio Hotel, and while having always been an excellent hotel, was now one of the Albert Pick Hotels; famous for hospitality and service and complete with convention and banquet facilities. Since the early 1980's, the building has been home to the Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority. Renamed Amedia Plaza, the 12-story building, which houses YMHA’s corporate offices, also features 92 senior apartments managed by YMHA. Renovations costing $6 million dollars were completed in 2002 by architects Ricciuti Balog & Partners which replaced windows, lighting and plumbing, and updated the heating and cooling system, making the building more energy efficient.
